Ex-Van der Graaf Generator cellist Chas Dickie formed the Polygenes sometime in the 1990's, with bass guitarist Chris Lonergan, drummer Paul Beavis, and guitarist Bob Shearn. Chris Page eventually replaced Paul on drums and Robbie McIntosh replaced Bob on guitar. The bulk of the material on Nine Stones features this later line-up.
Chas' writing, cello and keyboard playing dominate the album with beautifully dark textures and luscious landscapes.
Two Robbie McIntosh compositions written especially for the band also feature: Frankness, Robbie's humble tribute to the great Frank Zappa, and the acoustic Johnny goes to Greece (title inspired by Robbie's father-in-law).
View From an Eyelid is a Chris Lonergan composition performed entirely on bass guitar.
Old friend of Chas, Clive Bell, guests playing eastern wind instruments the Khene and Shakuhachi.
Nine Stones is a must for fans of Robbie's guitar playing. "I could really let myself go when playing with The Polygenes; after all, it's not very often you get a chance to play guitar solos that long. Gawd bless ya, Chas."
